New Employee Orientation Checklist

This is an excellent way to make sure you have covered all the topics during new hire orientation. To help properly set up an employees success during the orientation process, it will help strengthen a consistent path that will pay for itself as long as the orientation is done consistently and properly.

Introduction and Information

What is the restaurants mission statement? There are three key components that make up a mission statement:

  1. Key market – who is your target customer?
  2. Contribution – what product or service do you provide to that customer?
  3. Distinction – what makes your product or service unique, so that the customer would choose you?

History of the restaurant or business

Tell the new hires of your restaurants complete history

  1. How long have you been in business
  2. The type of customers that you are targeting
  3. What makes your restaurant different from the competition
  4. Where do you see your restaurant in the next 5 years?

Success of the restaurant

  1. Top notch training
  2. Consistency
  3. Integrity
  4. Management and the staff members on the same page

Team members characteristics

  1. Honesty
  2. Integrity
  3. Team player
  4. Reliable
  5. Good communication
  6. Positive attitude
  7. Doing the right thing for the right reason

Orientation Handouts

Giving the new hires a copy of the orientation checklist and employee handbook allow the new hire to visually see your policies and procedures at a glance.

Dress Code Standards

Explain to the new staff members your dress code policies. What is expected in the way I dress:

  1. Shoe/belt requirements
  2. Grooming/hygiene requirements
  3. Front of the house versus back of the house policies and procedures for uniforms

Pay and Schedules

  1. Explain to the new hires their rate of pay and position
  2. Give each new hire their training schedules
  3. Explain what is expected of them during the training process
  4. Pay and benefits
  5. Breaks
  6. Evaluation and wages

Professional Behavior

  1. Call out and Tardiness
  2. Off-duty behavior
  3. Employee parking

Point of Sale and Time Keeping

  1. Explain how to use the POS system and timekeeping system to all employees
  2. Hos to use the different register codes
  3. Standards & procedures – Missed time clock punch (in’s and out’s)

Harassment

Any source of harassment including sexual in nature is not tolerated in the workplace.

  1. Employee and management training in sexual harassment
  2. Different forms of harassment and discrimination

Security

OSHA and Safety Training

  1. OSHA Requirements
  2. Surface Maintenance
  3. Food Safety
  4. Fire Safety

A Thorough Orientation (New Employee Orientation Checklist)

Employees will know what is expected from them while employed at your establishment. By signing the new employee orientation checklist it will create a paper trail. If for some reason the staff member quits or is terminated the signed orientation may protect your business from unemployment filings or lawsuits. Documentation in the workplace protects you. It is very important that you communicate to the new hires that the managers and owners take the orientation process very seriously. Managers are the key to maintaining everything that was discussed in the orientation. Managers should consistently monitor the staff members, give direction and follow up on that direction daily.
